CARI- RESADE Project Installs Scientific Sensors at Buchanan Best Practice Hub to Advance Climate-Smart Agriculture
BUCHANAN, Liberia – The Improving Agricultural Resilience to Salinity through Development and Promotion of Pro-poor Technologies (RESADE) Project has taken a major step forward in strengthening evidence-based farming practices with the installation of advanced scientific sensors at the Best Practice Hub (BPH) in Buchanan.
Led by the Central Agricultural Research Institute (CARI) technical team, the sensors will collect real-time soil, weather, and water data, providing farmers and researchers with critical information to guide decision-making. The initiative is part of RESADE’s broader mission to enhance climate resilience, improve productivity, and empower smallholder farmers across Liberia.
Purpose of the Sensors: conduct soil monitoring, tracking moisture levels, senility, and nutrient content to optimize crop growth; record rainfall, temperature, and humidity to support climate-smart planning and water management, measuring water quality and availability for irrigation systems.
Dr. Zied Himermann, an Agronomist from ICBA headquarters, emphasized that the sensors will help farmers adopt precision agriculture techniques, reducing risks associated with unpredictable weather and soil degradation. By integrating scientific data into daily farming practices, farmers can improve yields, reduce losses, and strengthen food security.
Dr. James S. Dolo, National Coordinator, described the installation as a milestone in Liberia’s agricultural transformation: “These sensors will allow us to generate reliable data that informs both research and farmer practices. It is a step toward modernizing agriculture and ensuring that Liberia’s farmers are equipped to face climate challenges.”
The Buchanan Best Practice Hub will serve as a demonstration site for farmers, students, and extension agents, showcasing how technology can be harnessed to improve resilience and productivity. The data collected will also feed into national agricultural research systems, supporting policy development and scaling of best practices across the country.
